Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated The Chi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was established in Birmingham, Alabama on November 15, 1938. The mailing address is P.O. Box 12962, Birmingham, Alabama 35202. Chi Sigma is back on the scene and with spice! On April 29, 2008 Chi Sigma Chapter announced to the world their newest members at the First Graduate Rhoyal Production at Brother Byrant Park at 2:22 p.m. The members were Ashley Brown, Angelique Mason, Alicia Kindred, Asha Peebles, and Teresa McBeth-Smith. The Rhoyal Production was a coming out event for the newest members as well as a fundraiser for Relay for Life. The Chi Sigma chapter raised over $1500 in donations to Relay for Life, an event established by the American Cancer Society which offers individuals the opportunity to give back and fight against cancer. Chi Sigma’s participation in Relay for Life highlights one of Sigma Gamma Rho’s national projects, the Hattie McDaniel Cancer Awareness Program. From there, Chi Sigma decided to show the world how spicy the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho can be and formed a graduate step team. They went to perform in the First Annual Alumni Stepshow hosted by the Northport Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. June 13, 2008 was a monumental event for the sophisticated ladies of the Chi Sigma because the ladies of Chi Sigma won second place among the sororities that participated. Most assume that once you graduate and join a graduate chapter, you retire from fun and box up your step shoes. The Northport Alumni Chapter proved this assumption wrong. The Northport chapter hosted their first annual alumni step show at Paul Bryant High school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. There were seven alumni step teams featuring alumni chapters from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. from the state of Alabama. • The Chi Sigma team was the best act, saved for last. The Chi Sigma team was given a wonderful, original, and passionate introduction by Soror Sonia Nkashama. The sexy, intelligent, and sophisticated ladies of Chi Sigma had a work and play theme showing that the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. are not all work and no play. The members of the Chi Sigma team included at that time, the chapter Vice President Shandrita Curtis, Martinique Perkins, Angelique Mason, Dr. Melissa Norman, Christina Jones, Latresha Frederick and Shawnta Owens. The routine featured a sexy opening intro, cane routine, various old school versus new school dance routines from Michael Jackson’s “Pretty Young Thang” to an exit stroll to Mary J. Blige. The crowd loved it, especially the Michael Jackson imitation given by Soror Martinique Perkins. Now, who says that alumni chapters don’t still have it! The Chi Sigma Chapter is currently planning on participating in future step events. • From the fun and games, Chi Sigma decided to get back to work and promote in support of our motto “Greater Service, Greater Progress,” environmental responsibility by establishing a First Annual Sigma Go Green Recycling Initiative Event on July 12, 2008. Each member was challenged to save paper and plastics in their home and work while the chapter as a whole collected these materials during our monthly activities. Chi Sigma separated more than 15 bags of recyclable plastics and paper and were dropped off at the Alabama Environmental Council Recycling Center located on Second Avenue North and 25th Street. This event taught the importance of taking responsibility for the environment and provided ways that each individual could do her part through recycling. On this same day, Chi Sigma installed new officers for the 2008-2010 year. The new officers are as follows: Shandrita Curtis as President, Melissa Norman as Vice President, Marquita Yelling & Terrika Eatmon as Undergraduate Advisors of University of Alabama-Birmingham, Sonia Nkashama as Secretary, Martinique Perkins as Chaplain, Jorice Johnson as Rhoer Coordinator, Latresha Frederick as Social Committee Chair and Treasurer, Delores Shropshire as Undergraduate Advisor of Miles College, Shawnta Owens as Undergraduate Advisor of University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, Yolanda Valentin as Parliamentarian, and Alicia Kindred as Historian and Reporter. • After installments, Chi Sigma decided to reach out and promote Greek unity and Operation Big BookBag by hosting a Golden K-9 BBQ with the brothers of the Alpha Delta Iota chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, on July 27, 2008 at Bessie Estelle Park. Operation Big BookBag is a Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority International Project in partnership with the A.E.A.O.N.M.S., Inc. Chi Sigma believes that “It takes a village to raise a child”. This is the motto held by many Black Americans; however, in today’s society this belief has fallen through the cracks, and our children are suffering due to it. It is up to us, as adults, to assist our children on their journey by giving them the knowledge and the necessary supplies to retain that knowledge. At this event, Chi Sigma raised over $500 in school supplies. The school supplies were given to two local Birmingham public schools, Foresthill Middle and Norwood Elementary School. • Our contact person for potential members and sorors who are interested in reactivating is Dr. Melissa Norman and she may be reached at (205) 266-5536.
