Dove and Stellar Award nominated Gospel star, Bryan Wilson, is coming back to his native Danville to kick-off a Gathering. “It’s like a revival but I don’t want to call it that,” says Wilson. “It’s going to be good ole fashioned church like I grew up on but it’s geared towards my generation and younger because that’s the population that’s leaving church behind. I don’t want them to abandon church because they are fed up with hypocritical preachers and the politics of the church.” It’s all a part of Wilson’s 501c3 organization, The Bapolstogic Movement, which he launched to bring together the music and doctrine of the Baptist, COGIC and Apostolic denominations he was raised in. After earning an undergraduate degree in religion at Claflin University and spending a year of study at Princeton Theological Seminary, Wilson has accepted the call to preach and has been evangelizing for years. “So many people I grew up with in Danville feel hopeless and so many have died without achieving their dreams,” he adds. “So, I wanted to come back and bring some hope and inspiration.”
The three-night gathering takes place Thursday, June 14th through Saturday, June 16th at the Mt. Zion Word of Life Church at 1535 E. Fairchild Street, Danville, IL 61832. Guest psalmists during the gathering will include Christian Cunningham, who was recently a contestant on the NBC “Today” show’s kids version of “The Voice” reality series; season 4 “American Idol” contestant Jared Yates; and Steve Bynum (aka Priest Soul) who sings with R&B star, Tank. Wilson is also calling together a throwback community choir to sing and perform during the services. Wilson’s brother, Aaron Wilson, will serve as the music director.
Bryan Wilson rose to fame singing his soulful, melismatic rendition of “His Eye on the Sparrow” with the Mississippi Children’s Choir when he was 10 years old. YouTube video of the spine-tingling performance has over 1.5 million YouTube hits. Over the years, Wilson has recorded three solo CDs and is currently finishing up his first CD for Blacksmoke Music Worldwide, the label that gave birth to gospel stars James Fortune & FIYA and Earnest Pugh. The new CD, “And It’s Over”, is scheduled for a fall 2012 release.
