There are some fantastic jazz releases that are currently available. Three of such are A Handful Of Changes (Ari Erev), Shapes (Nils Weinhold) and Wobble Walkin (The Duke Robillard Jazz Trio). When choosing from a selection such as this, it is hard to pick just one favorite.
Pianist and Composer Ari Erev’s latest offering, A Handful Of Changes, is a very unique collection. A lot of emotion is felt in Erev’s compositions.  The initial track, “Open Possibilities” is a very rhythmic piece that is full of energy.  The Latin infused undertones add the perfect touch to this selection. “Step By Step” has an enchantingly haunting melody that is just mesmerizing.  “Simply Melody” is destined to be a disc favorite. Ofer Shapiro is the special guest on “Precious Present”, a wonderful Brazilian inspired piece.  Following on the success of Erev’s About Time collection, A Handful Of Changes shows just how diverse Erev can be.  He is definitely a giant.

Shapes is the title of guitarist/composer Nils Weinhold’s debut recording.  Shapes is comprised of eight innovative tracks.  This alone is quite the feat for a young German musician who just got his Masters in May of 2010. “A Horse Is Still A Horse” is the opening selection. It is a multifaceted, interesting piece. “Ballad For Anne” is an exquisite and beautiful track. Shapes is most assuredly a wonderful beginning for Weinhold.   ***
Hang on to your seats boys and girls because The Exciting Sounds Of The Duke Robillard Jazz Trio has taken stage and they certainly know how to tear up the joint. From the opening bluesy/jazz note of the title track “Wobble Walkin’” to the final tone of “Jesse’s Blues”, these cats really know how to have a good time (and it shows on their CD). Wobble Walkin is a magnificent collection of terrific compositions. It is a great feel good anthology – something that Duke Robillard has become known for.
