Cox Radio and the State Farm Best in Minority Business Awards presented by Malcolm Pirnie and Wachovia on Thursday, February 18th. David Dubose, General Manager stated that the event “prides itself on the power of celebrating minorities and women in business” in Birmingham. “This event brings the best of our community together as well as our city to recognize diversity in all sectors,” he continued. Representative Oliver Robinson served as Keynote Speaker at the Awards, with Isis Jones of 98.7 KISS FM serving as Mistress of Ceremonies. Mayor William Bell greeted the crowd and expressed appreciation to the sponsors of the event. Finalists and winners in five categories were honored at the Harbert Center before a crowd of nearly 300 civic and corporate leaders. Deidra K. Lloyd, Coordinator of the Best in Minority Business Awards, said “this event was a fitting tribute to so many who contribute to the heritage of the Magic City and a wonderful salute to those who embrace diversity.” Dave Donnell of Cox Radio presented the finalists for the Tim McReynolds Non-Profit Leadership Award: the Sickle Cell Disease Association, UAB Minority Health Research Center, and YMCA. The Junior League of Birmingham was announced as the category winner. The Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. Encouraging Diversity Award, presented by Brenda M. Brantley, Client Development Manager, honored Ed Fields, VP of Projects Unlimited, Inc. Finalists for the award: Erskine ‘Chuck’ Faush of ‘nContrast, Stephanie Holland of sheconomy.com, and Alicia Johnson of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Wachovia’s Executive of the Year Award was presented to Gerald Johnson of Southern Company by Mike Donnelly, Mid South Regional President of Wachovia/Wells Fargo. Executive of the Year finalists: Dr. Marquita Davis, Gaynell Hendricks and Isabel Rubio. Dr. Jack Schaeffer presented the Schaeffer Eye Center Young Professional Award to Tammy Fincher, and announced the finalists: William Barnes, Meredith Davidson and Lukata Mjumbe. Dr. Schaeffer also announced that Tammy Fincher would receive a pair of designer sunglasses from one of the 13 locations of Schaeffer Eye Center. The State Farm® Best in Minority Business Awards, presented by Walt Phillips, Claim Section Manager were given to small and medium business leaders. Dr. Ross Gardner won the Small Business Category and was honored with finalists Realty Plus LLC – Darryl Vincent Bowie, Upgrade Magazine’s Rashada Leroy, and Sam Wiggins of the Wiggins Law Firm. The winner of the Medium Business category, Rose Fraser of Hair Reflections was presented with finalists Khafra Engineers and Monumental Contracting Service. |
