 Some members of the Trash ‘n’ Treasure team get together to launch the mega-rummage sale which is a popular part of the Independence Day Festival at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood.Trash ‘n’ Treasure Team Gathers Planning for the Birmingham area’s longest running 4th of July festival is in high gear. The 63rd Annual Our Lady of Sorrows Church Independence Day Festival will be on Wednesday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the church grounds at 1728 Oxmoor Road, Homewood. The grand marshal is OLS Pastor Rev. Msgr. Martin Muller. The Knights of Columbus #4304 coordinates the festival and welcomes everyone to the fund-raiser which will include barbeque, games, a raffle, and the popular Trash ‘n’ Treasure rummage sale. The Trash ‘n’ Treasure team members officially launched their busy season on May 16. More than 100 volunteers enjoyed a pot luck dinner that evening at the church and heard from Melanie Falconer, the rummage sale chairman. She revealed that the goal of the sale is $50,000. She said that once again the gymnasium doors will open at 8 a.m. for the first 300 people who donate $5 for an early bird admission ticket. Otherwise, customers can enter for free at 9 a.m. Falconer said that five storage units are already filled with donated furniture. The furniture will be sold under a 40’ x 80’ tent next to the gym which will be packed with other items. She said the shoe drive, which has been going on for several months, is a success. More than 300 pairs of shoes have been repaired and spruced up by Vic Costa at the Homewood Shoe Hospital. She also announced that Trash ‘n’ Treasure has a Facebook page which includes schedule updates and photos and she encouraged everyone to “like us on Facebook.” Red and white yard signs will be available for volunteers to advertise the event. The official date for donations to start rolling in is May 28 and the last day to donate is June 30. Barbeque chairman Joe Falconer said the Knights will begin cooking about 5,000 pounds of meat beginning July 1. Guests can eat under a 30’ x 30’ tent, in the Parish Hall, or take it home. Bulk meat sales will be available in the school cafeteria during the festival. Pre-Sales, bulk only, will be on Tuesday, July 3 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Falconer said the raffle, once again, is an exciting element. The grand prize is $10,000 cash donated by Falconer and John and Ann Hardin. The second prize is $2,000 cash, third prize is $1,000 cash, fourth prize is a two night stay at Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa, and the fifth prize is an Apple iPad donated by the OLS Knights of Columbus #4304. |
