Ask any woman what her favorite accessory is and many will confess their love for shoes. As part of their Global Poverty Initiative, the members of Omicron Omega Chapter hosted a shoe drive benefiting Sole 4 Souls. During its annual spring joint meeting event held on the campus of Samford University, members from local chapters located on the campus of the Gamma Pi Chapter (Miles College), the Iota Phi Chapter (UAB), the Nu Delta Chapter (Birmingham Southern College), the Omicron Mu Chapter (Samford University) and the Mu Mu Chapter (University of Montevallo), joined forces to collect shoes for the Sole 4 Soul organization. “We are proud that our undergraduate members are just as committed to serving the community as we are. These young ladies represent our future and have proven that they are excellent leaders”, said the president of the Omicron Omega Chapter, Ms. Terricetta McCall.
More than one hundred pairs of shoes were collected by the graduate and undergraduate members of the sorority. This shoe drive was the kick-off to a month long collection drive to help the less fortunate. Next month, the chapters will collect suits, shoes, handbags, accessories and dresses for several local women shelters including My Sister’s Closet at the YWCA. These projects are a continuation of the efforts to support AKA’s international program initiative which focuses on Global Poverty. “Omicron Omega is committed to providing service to the community and working with local organizations which address issues related to homelessness and poverty,” said Thomasyne Hill, Chair of the Global Poverty Committee.
